Make Most Fonts into a Stencil

If you are cutting a message into the border or a solid background, most fonts result in you having to glue in the tiny centers of letters like the e and the o. The only fonts that work well are stencil fonts, and to be honest, the ones available for free are, well...UGLY! They are your typical Army style square template letters.

What we need for Cricut are more font styles that will cut like a stencil, leaving the middles on the background paper. I found this font the other day, where MOST of the letters had the required "slit" in them that allows them to leave the middle behind. Only four letters needed to be modified. It really isn't hard to do. You type in the whole alphabet in Caps and lower case. Each letter that is a problem, usually A,B,D,O,P,Q,R and a,b,d,e,g,o,p,q, you need to "take a chunk out of it" somewhere. You can do this by using the Path...difference command. First convert your text to a path, by doing the path...object to path command.

Make a small thin rectangle and place it on the letter outline somewhere, where it overlaps the inner "circle" or ellipse. Select both the letter outline and the rectangle. Select Path...difference. ARe you done? No, one more step. Then select the letter outline with the chunk out of it and the Inner circle or ellipse. Do path....diffence one more time.

This font is 2 Nelson ShoCard Fat DNA. I show you it as modified. The font is now an svg file. You would open it and cut and paste the letters you need from the inkscape document to the one your are working on. It is no longer a font. Some day I will look into how I could turn it back into a font, but not today.

If you decide to turn other fonts into a stencil font, I'll be glad to post them here on the blog. Maybe we can develop a library of pretty stencil fonts we can all use.
