Memorial Day Weekend Up North - St Germain, WI

Leaves are greening up nicely and we are enjoying a beautiful weekend. Took a canoe ride, son took a swim at the beach, we went on a walk along Halberstadt Road and saw a newborn fawn last night!






Folks are out fishing from piers and from their boats...

Wildlife at Black Bear Lodge

Fritz the Fox is back! He took up residency last winter outside the main office; we tried all winter to photograph him as he would trot past our front door or walk through the resort. Our Manager even came face to face with him on the lake front one day but did not have camera in hand! We found his tracks in the snow by the Treehouse yesterday, a sure sign that we will see him soon. Hopefully we can get a photo of him to share this winter! We saw squirrels carrying whole hot dog buns down the driveway today, which was very funny, a guest must be feeding them. Our Snowshow Hares have turned completely white, as have the weasels. Did you know that when the short-haired weasel turns white it is called an ermine? We watched one run across the trailer parking lot a few days ago; first time we can recall seeing one on the resort. When you stay at the Black Bear Lodge located on Little St. Germain Lake, you never know what kinds of wonderful wildlife you will encounter.

Things to do in the Northwoods

We had a guest tell us today how beautiful it is in the Northwoods, even with the leaves gone! They are having a great time, going to the Casinos, fishing off the shore, walking in the woods, trying different restaurants, shopping and relaxing by the fireplace. This quiet time is a great time to come up, visit and enjoy the lowest rates of the year! The Black Bear Lodge is located on Little St. Germain Lake and lodging accommodations have a beautiful view of the lake.

Indian Summer is here!

Wow, what great weather we are having! It is Indian Summer, which is defined by having a hard frost, followed by the temperature being 10 degrees above normal. So if you're looking for a place to go this weekend, bring the family and drive up to the Black Bear Lodge, on Little St. Germain lake.

Enjoy biking, hiking, fishing, walking or driving down a rustic road and look at the fall colors and view our wildlife. One guest saw 3 bear cubs sitting in the road the other day, how great is that!

Bear Facts

When you're a bear, you get to hibernate. You do nothing but sleep for six months. Before you hibernate, you're supposed to eat yourself silly. Hummingbirds

The Ruby-throated Hummingbirds are stocking up on as much nectar as they can right now, for their long journey across the Gulf of Mexico. It is amazing how this tiny bird can fly that far! Experts expect populations of Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, as well as other migratory birds, to be affected by the spill. We hope your family sees the birds feeding and can enjoy them around Lt. Wildlife facts in the Northwoods': Did you know, the common loon can dive in excess of 200 feet. The double crested cormorant dives as deep as 120 feet, and members of the beaver families can stay under water for 10 to 12 minutes. You can see loons on Little St Germain Lake at the Black Bear Lodge resort in Wisconsin, during spring, summer and fall.

We had a deer visit the office today! He walked right up to the front window and looked like he wanted to make a reservation, I'm sure when he realized it was the "Black Bear" Lodge he decided to find a more Deer friendly resort. We love our wildlife, which we see often on the grounds.

Free Fishing Seminar

Today we had a free fishing seminar presented by Fred Brogle "Have Rod will Travel" at the Black Bear Lodge. He talked about this week being a very good week to catch Musky, since there is a full moon. Our guests at the Black Bear Lodge enjoy weekly free fishing seminars provided by local fishing guides. Come find all the Eagles on display throughout Eagle River. Each “Eagle” was individually commissioned by local businesses and will be displayed at different locations throughout the Eagle River area. Finding and viewing this city wide art gallery also gives locals and visitors the chance to win various prizes! Each “Eagle” has a secret letter. Each letter is a part of a phrase. Collect all the letters and rearrange them to reveal the secret message and enter into the Grand Prize Drawing. For contest rules and the contest form - click here.

Then, join us for the annual Festival of Flavors on August 28th where you’ll get a chance to own one of these one-of-a-kind pieces of art. Two eagles spotted in Upper East Bay, Lt St Germain Lake

Beautiful weather today and many were out to enjoy the lake -- boating, fishing and water skiing too. The nest in Upper East Bay had a resident bald eagle plus another perched on a neighboring branch. We have had as many as 7 at one time in the pine trees along our lakefront this spring! -Diane
