Greetings! Here is the weekly area fishing report...
Strong bass, northern, bluegill and perch action, with a moderately good musky and walleye bite in the Eagle River, Wisconsin area.
The early summer season has made things a bit harder on Eagle River, Wisconsin anglers, because the very warm weather means more recreational traffic than fishing, but if an angler is willing to work around it, there are still some very good fishing opportunities to be had.
The bass fishing remains strong with smallmouth in areas of deeper, rocky water. Plastics are still big with pumpkinseed a top color choice in worms.
Crawlers and leeches are also pulling fish, while jigging. Shad Raps bounced through the rocks are also pulling some nice smallies. Largemouth, for the most part are working the weeds for food, and a quickly retrieved spinnerbait, Jitterbug or Timberdoodle are all productive.
Northern are still weed related and hitting strong, smacking spinnerbaits, chubs and mid-sized bucktails. Lots of fish in the lower 30-inch range.
Bluegills and perch are doing well in mid-lake areas of weeds. Leaf worms, medium leeches, and pieces of Berkley Gulp remain top choices for bait.
These fish are schooling up more now, and are quite mobile so stay flexible and move with the school to stay on, or locate bigger fish (you will be doing some sorting). Crappie have been hanging around some kind of structure in depths to 12 feet. Nice sized slabs are tbeing take on smaller minnows, one-inch plastics or Cubbies on a jig or slip bobber rig.
Walleye are back on a normal feeding pattern. Keep on the 6 to 8 foot weed edges with fatheads for nice eaters, and for bigger fare, move to deeper areas with hardbottoms using nightcrawlers and/or large leeches. Low light periods continue to perform best. If you haven't tried the new Mister Twister G-Grub leeches yet, you're missing out.
Musky action has been moderate to strong lately, with a number of fish being seen, most in the low/mid 40-inch range. Mud, weeds, and smaller bucktails and spinnerbaits are key right now as is shallow water. This is far from a "normal" early summer pattern, Lures are being ripped as the current pattern continues to hold for faster presentations. Secondary breaklines with weeds are also producing, with bucktails, the Mepps Sassy Shad Muskie Killers, and mid-sized the baits of choice. Topwaters in some of these skinny areas are beginning to show promise as well. Musky hunters should be prepared for a pattern change as there is a predicted cool down on the way.
