Fishing Report

Greetings! Here is the weekly fishing report!

Top notch walleye action, with bass and northern very strong, and the musky bite steady, in the Eagle River, Wisconsin area.

Mother Nature's turned up the heat, and while it can make fishing a bit uncomfortable during the day, the fishing grade for Eagle River is up to an "A."

Walleye angling in the Eagle River area is top notch right now on both leeches and crawlers. It's still weed-related so find edges and work around them with a jig. Slip bobbers just off the bottom are also producing.

Average depths are anywhere from 6 to 15 feet. If the water has current, move up to redtails or walleye suckers, with bottom bouncers or slip bobbers. Sizes of fish at low light are several inches larger than those under a bright sky. During the day, jig a Sonar in water over 15 feet in the rocks.

Eagle River bass fishing remains extremely strong. Smallies are holding around well defined edges, like where rock and sand or mud and rock meet.

The smallies will be over the harder surface around 15 feet down, where it's a good spot to drop a whole crawler, or extra-large leech on a jig or slip bobber. As its gets darker, move into more covered areas with Yum or Gulp!

6 to 7 inch worms. Largemouth have been sticking to areas of stumps and deadfalls, or very broadleaf weeds. Weedless worms, wacky-rigged plastics, and Timberdoodles are all top choices. The little Creepers, Jitterbugs and similar topwaters are also producing, or drop a Cleo on the outsides of these areas.

Northern are active in the weeds, with spinnerbaits, buzzbaits and chatterbaits all very effective. Don't overlook the big weedless worms, either. Depths don't seem to matter.
Muskies are hanging in 6 to 15 feet of water, tucked into the weeds. The biggest broadleaf weeds or cabbage beds seem to be harboring the most fish, with low light hours being peak times. Use Topraiders and Turrbos.

Daylight hours are still finding larger bucktails the bait of choice. The Mepps Musky Killer Sassy Shad and Marabous, along with Ghostails (number 1), Cowgirls and Supergirls are all taking fish. As has been the pattern make sure to do a figure eight after each cast, at the boat. With high skies think about more stained water lakes.

Panfishing is good at most locations, either from shore or a boat. Weeds,
branches or similar structure will almost guarantee fish. Nothing too huge right away, but if the kids want action, put on a small hook with a red leaf worm or beavertail; add a splitshot and bobber and that'll do it. Nice perch are taking jigged leeches and small minnows in and around the weeds.

Bluegills are a bit deeper, with half a crawler or beavertail productive.
Crappie are sticking with small minnows or plastics, no larger than an inch, in depths to 12 feet.

Simpsons Band Names

So, here's the concept: we're trying to come up with the best band names that are somehow connected to The Simpsons. The band names have to be cool enough so that a non-fan would like them, but only a fan would get the reference. Therefore, D'oh! would not work, because everyone would know it for a Simpsons reference, but Evergreen Terrace would. I also am not including "Santa's Lil' Helper, "Ay Carumba," "Don't have a Cow" and "Eat My Shorts," as those are all common phrases before the Simpsons. Anyway, the following are the best I could come up with.

THE TOP TWENTY OBSCURE SIMPSONS BAND NAMES

#20 Sideshow Luke Perry - Who can forget Krusty's worthless half-brother? (I was also tempted to go with "Krudler," a racehorse co-owned by Krusty and Bette Midler.)

#19 Worker and Parasite – This would make a great German band

#18 In Rod We Trust – This would also make a good Twilight Zone tribute band.

#17 Floor Pie – Who hasn't fallen for this most subtle of traps?

    #16 Poochie, We Hardly Knew Ye – "The name's Poochie D/and I rock the Telly/I'm half Joe Camel/And a third Fonzarelli/I'm the kung fu hippie/From Gangsta city/I'm a rappin' Surfer/you the fool I pity!"

#15 Nahasapeemapetilon – You're halfway to "MacArthur Park" just with the name

#14 Mr. Plow – "What's my name? Mr. Plow. That name again is Mr. Plow."

#13 Worst Band Ever! – Right now Weezer is upset they didn't think of this ironic band name first.

    #12 Feast of Maximum Occupancy – It's not just a band, it's a religion!

#11 I was saying Boo-urns – For the Hans Moleman in all of us.

#10 Maison Derriere – "We're the gin in your martini, the clams on your linguini, yes we put the [BOING sound-effect] in Springfield!" Move over Barry White

#9 Pageant of the Transmundane – It just sounds so much more majestic than Freak Show, doesn't it? To this day Billy Corgan is made he made his second group Zwan.

#8 The Gilded Truffle – I'm sensing Southern Rock, or possibly an operatic touring company

#7 Fishbulb – "Mr. Sparkle" would also make a fantastic name, but Fishbulb just gets at the heart of what makes The Simpsons great

#6 Remorseless Eating Machine – There's no truth to the rumor that this is made up of the ghosts of Miami Sound Machine. (Too soon?)

#5 Amanda Hugginkiss – Why can't I find Amanda Hugginkiss? (Maybe my standards are too high.)

#4 Serak the Preparer – If you were really cool, you'd have a bumper sticker made up saying, "Don't blame me, I voted for Serak the Preparer." (This one is really obscure, so ten points to anyone who got it.)

#3 Half-Inflated Devil Lord – This band could totally spin off of Spinal Tap. You've got death-metal just waiting to happen. Oy! (I love how they censored the syndicated episode.)

#2 Purple Monkey Dishwasher – I'm so excited about this one that I'm actually going to start it. I'm thinking Rap/Folk/Polka, or RaFolka. Who's with me?

And the number one obscure band name you can get from The Simpsons is….

#1 Stonecutters – You KNOW you want to sing along, so I have the lyrics for you. Long live Steve Gutenberg!

    Who controls the British crown?
Who keeps the metric system down?
    We do! We do!
Who leaves Atlantis off the maps?
Who keeps the Martians under wraps?
    We do! We do!
Who holds back the electric car?
Who makes Steve Guttenberg a star?
    We do! We do!
Who robs the cavefish of their sight?
    Who rigs every Oscars night?
    We do! We do!

"Good night, Springden; there will be no encore!"

Fishing Report

Good morning! Here is the weekly fishing report...

Strong panfish bite, with northern hitting, and bass consistent in the Eagle River, Wisconsin area.

The overall fishing grade lately in the Eagle River, Wisconsin area is a B-.
If you're out with kids you'll have a field day because there's plenty of panfish action in and around the weeds, and there'll be an occasional bass or northern hitting as well. It's a blast with the family, but if you're a more serious anglers things are a little tougher.

In the Eagle River area, small perch and gills are in the weed pockets of relatively shallow water. For quality fish move out to depths of eight plus feet adjacent to weeds. Probe waters much deeper, but use your electronics to keep the weeds in sight. Slip bobbers rigged with a gob of leaf worms or a fat leech are effective. Crappie can suspend in these same areas, but downsize your presentations to tube jigs, small minnows or Mini-Mites. Some nice panfish are being reported.
Northern are northern. Throw an old shoe in the weeds in the Eagle River area, and the northern will hit it. Mepps number 5 Aglias or lipless crankbaits like the Rat L Trap or Bucher Power Tec pro will all work.

Target weedy areas between 6 to 10 feet deep. Average size northern caught is about 24 inches.
Bass fishing remains consistent with smallies being taken both shallow and deep. Timberdoodles in the pads, Senko worms through the weeds and rubber creatures are drawing the smallies in the 5 to 8 foot range. Deeper fish are slamming XL leeches, and whole crawlers over hard bottom in depths to 20 plus feet. Largemouth are taking Creepers, Jitterburgs and all sorts of plastics fished over, in and around weeds, piers, stumps or deadfalls.

Musky anglers in the Eagle River area are meeting with success during the early/late periods. Topwaters are producing as are Hellhounds and a host of other shallower running jerk or glidebaits. Target 4 to 8 feet of water in and around broadleaf weeds or thick coontail for best results. As the day brightens up move to deeper weeds, with mid-sized to whopper bucktails.
Cowgirls have been working very well, along with Mepps Musky Killers and Sassy Shads, which have been taking fish at boatside. It is important to finish off EVERY cast with a figure eight, no matter what you're throwing.

Walleye remain mobile in the Eagle Rvier area, but start in the deeper weeds with a jig and a crawler or leech. Use both a cast/retrieve presentation as well as a slip bobber, to increase the odds of success. Most of these walleye are just off the bottom, with many smaller fish being caught (and released). In low light periods switch to walleye suckers, redtails or XL fatheads on a jig, with at least a number 2 hook. Lighted bobbers should not be overlooked. Don't pass up the deeper, hardbottom flats. Walleyes are piled up in these areas at times, especially during the day. Dropping a Minnow-Rap (which dives to 12 plus feet, despite its size) or bottom bouncer with a crawler, should score some bites. Historically, these fish are bigger, too.

Halfway Through Summer

Greetings from the Northwoods! The weather here has been chilly the last couple days, and we have been getting some rain and storms throughout the last week. Our fourth of July celebrations wrapped up well with some spectacular fireworks and a great Centennial celebration.

Summer is halfway over already, and everybody is enjoying the outdoors! Conditions are great for biking and hiking as the temperature and humidity is on the low side. See you around St. Germain!

Fishing Report

Here is the latest fishing report...

Bass, walleye, northern, and panfish all out in force, with musky hitting but finicky, in the Eagle River, Wisconsin area.

The fish are active and hungry as warmer weather takes over, and with anglers putting in a little work, and adopting to different tactics, they are not disappointed in the bite in the Eagle River, Wisconsin area.

Bass are all over the place in the Eagle River area, with average sizes for both large and smallmouth over 18 inches. For the largemouth work the lily pads with a Mepps Timberdoodle and hold on. Surface frogs or creatures are nailing big buckets, as are little, noisy topwaters. Small spinnerbaits bounced in and around shallower structure are also finding fish. The smallies have moved to deeper haunts with sand or rock bottoms. Well established underwater points are holding fish, with beavertails, crawlers or big leeches being the preferred baits.

Walleye are still in and around the deeper weeds all over the Eagle River area. Leeches and crawlers are outperforming minnows. Work deep areas with hard bottoms with slip bobbers as the day progresses. Good action, albeit, there are numbers of smaller fish being caught (and released). Anglers are still getting some nice eaters, with a lunker brought in here-and-there.
Northern are doing what they do best in the Eagle River area - - eating everything. Try a Booyah Boogie bait. This chatter-style spinner will prompt immediate and forceful strikes. Golden shiners, chubs, smaller bucktails and lipless crankbaits have been very productive in weedy areas from 6 to 10 feet.

Musky hunters in the Eagle River area are getting some nice fish, but the musky are finicky right now. Anglers may spot several in one area, but then only contact one that's active. Every musky caught (and released!) means a lot of work was put in to get it. Anglers who don't practice a figure eight at boatside will probably miss the bite. Musky are following up to the boat. This is especially true during the day when the open water bite is slow. With the high skies, work deeper lakes with well established weeds, usually in water 4 to 8 feet deep. Bucktails are still taking fish in these areas. Move up into the 700 series Buchers, and number 1 and 2 Ghost Tails or Cowgirls. Marabous are having success with Mepps and Supergirls working, too. The secret to working any/all of these lures is in the "pause." As an angler brings lure in, pause for a second and the Marabou feathers literally "puff," then continue the retrieve. That moment of delay triggers the majority of strikes. It's also a good time to dust off the Suicks, and star throwing them.

Depending on the type of weeds, panfish are out in force. The broadleaf weeds will hold more crappie. Work small jigs tipped with plastics, Cubbies or tube jigs. The fish are very mobile and if a school is located, follow it, even though it may contain only a few fish. As a school moves to deeper water, the bigger fish will start to hit, as that is where they are locating. Bluegills and perch are on deeper weed edges, with small minnows, medium leeches or leafe worms doing the trick. Slip bobbers are effective.

Harry Potter Band Names

[this top ten list comes from Hyperion Chronicles #456 The Dumbledorks]

THE TOP TEN HARRY POTTER BAND NAMES

(Suggested band type in parenthesis, as well as who thought of it if not me)

#10 The Weaseleys (Weezer crossed with Hanson; Carlos) – If they were all redheads, all the better!

#9 Gillyweed (College Rock; think Phish; Gadget) – I think you know what weed their listeners would support

#8 Goldensnitch (Rock; Teela) – Actually this would make a great Harry Potter Bond hybrid, huh?

#7 The Dumble Doors (Psychedelic Acid-folk; Kaida) – Maybe if you put an album cover with Jim Morrison on stage he could sing along!

#6 Levy o'SAH! (Celtic) – This is neither here nor there, but I wonder what it would be like if the soundtrack to Harry Potter V switched with THE DEPARTED. You're curious, aren't you?

#5 Parseltongue (Gothic) – I can totally see them hooking up with Marilyn Manson and The Chemical Brothers for a Monsters of Goth tour

#4 Zombie Dumbledore (Pop; Sea Hag) – Not only would they write infectious beats, but I bet this would make a great internet cartoon

#3 Hermione's Hymen (Chick Rock) – And somewhere the Indigo Girls just raised their heads from slumber. (Hey, I just thought of this as I am writing it up, but wouldn't Ravenclaw be a great band in the vein of Pussycat Dolls?)

#2 Diagon Alley (Alternative; Koz) – In the Great "E Street Band" mode, Diagon Alley just sounds cool. Is that where they are from? Where they are going? I cannot wait to listen!

And the number one Harry Potter band name….

#1 Mudblood (Speed Metal) – They are dark, they are sinister, and if you are not careful, your 12-year-old daughter will hook up with the drummer.

Fishing Report

Greetings! Here is the weekly area fishing report...

Strong bass, northern, bluegill and perch action, with a moderately good musky and walleye bite in the Eagle River, Wisconsin area.

The early summer season has made things a bit harder on Eagle River, Wisconsin anglers, because the very warm weather means more recreational traffic than fishing, but if an angler is willing to work around it, there are still some very good fishing opportunities to be had.
The bass fishing remains strong with smallmouth in areas of deeper, rocky water. Plastics are still big with pumpkinseed a top color choice in worms.

Crawlers and leeches are also pulling fish, while jigging. Shad Raps bounced through the rocks are also pulling some nice smallies. Largemouth, for the most part are working the weeds for food, and a quickly retrieved spinnerbait, Jitterbug or Timberdoodle are all productive.

Northern are still weed related and hitting strong, smacking spinnerbaits, chubs and mid-sized bucktails. Lots of fish in the lower 30-inch range.

Bluegills and perch are doing well in mid-lake areas of weeds. Leaf worms, medium leeches, and pieces of Berkley Gulp remain top choices for bait.

These fish are schooling up more now, and are quite mobile so stay flexible and move with the school to stay on, or locate bigger fish (you will be doing some sorting). Crappie have been hanging around some kind of structure in depths to 12 feet. Nice sized slabs are tbeing take on smaller minnows, one-inch plastics or Cubbies on a jig or slip bobber rig.

Walleye are back on a normal feeding pattern. Keep on the 6 to 8 foot weed edges with fatheads for nice eaters, and for bigger fare, move to deeper areas with hardbottoms using nightcrawlers and/or large leeches. Low light periods continue to perform best. If you haven't tried the new Mister Twister G-Grub leeches yet, you're missing out.

Musky action has been moderate to strong lately, with a number of fish being seen, most in the low/mid 40-inch range. Mud, weeds, and smaller bucktails and spinnerbaits are key right now as is shallow water. This is far from a "normal" early summer pattern, Lures are being ripped as the current pattern continues to hold for faster presentations. Secondary breaklines with weeds are also producing, with bucktails, the Mepps Sassy Shad Muskie Killers, and mid-sized the baits of choice. Topwaters in some of these skinny areas are beginning to show promise as well. Musky hunters should be prepared for a pattern change as there is a predicted cool down on the way.

(Report for the Eagle River Chamber of Commerce based on Creative Brilliance interview with Mike Michalak of Guides Choice Pro Shop).
