Spring Update

    Greetings!

It is quite chilly out this morning...unusual for Memorial Day Weekend! This weekend we are welcoming back many of our return guests, and welcoming new ones as well. Today is the Classic Sled Roundup and Swap at the St. Germain Community Park. Come on out and take a look or do some swapping! I was able to get a sneak peak yesterday evening at a few of the vintage snowmobiles that were going to be on display today. How exciting and great to see a Ski-Doo from the 60's!

Below is the weekly fishing report for those fishing enthusiasts! (Report based on Creative Brilliance interview with Mike Michalak of Guides Choice Pro Shop).

(VILAS COUNTY) -- as of May 27, 2007:

(Head): Very good musky opener, with strong walleye, smallie, northern and crappie bite in the Eagle River, Wisconsin area.

The all around "fishing grade" in the Eagle River, Wisconsin area right now is an "A minus," and the only reason it's not a "straight A," is because of the wind conditions, not the fishing action. Savvy anglers used wind socks, cast into the wind, and anchored. Drifting was not the way to go.

The musky opener produced good numbers of fish, including some into the mid 40 inch range. Most of the fish are females and many look "beat up" from the spawn. The secret to success at the opener was boat control, because of the wind. The muskies were suspended at varying depths depending on the lake, and were mostly weed related. For instance, in 25 to 30 feet of water, the musky are in the top third. On shallower lakes, anglers were getting hits in water as shallow as 2 feet indeed, a good number of walleye anglers who were fishing 5 to 6 feet got musky hits. A variety of shallower running smaller baits (six inches or so) worked, including swim baits and plastics, such as Suzy Suckers, and Storm Kick'n Minnows. A slow retrieve is a must right now.

Walleye are around new coontail in 5 to 8 feet of water, in areas just adjacent to deep water. Good action, and some nice sized fish are being caught. Use a jig and a minnow.

Catch-and-release smallie action is still off the charts. Anglers are getting lots of hits both deep and shallow. Fish deep sand or rock bottoms using a leech. Anglers going shallow (the smallies are just starting to bed on some lakes) are having big success with small spinners, plastic worms and tube jigs in crayfish hues/patterns.

The northern bite is great. Fish 4 to 7 feet of water in and around emergent weeds. Most anything that is tossed is getting a hit, and the nice thing about it is that not only is the action good, but nice sized northerns are being caught, averaging 26 inches.

The crappie are done spawning, and have moved out to deeper water, where they are suspending at varying depths on the water column. Use electronics to locate a school, and be prepared to move around a great deal, just as the crappie are doing. Best action is coming from crappie minnows.

    Stay warm and dry today!

Fishing Update

Fishing season has been in full swing for about two weeks now. Here are some reports of fishing in the area...

*Catch-and-release bass fishing in the area is great. Both largemouth and smallmouth are in 4 to 6 feet of water, weed related around drowned wood. The average size of the bass thus far is going 19 to 20 inches. Use a small crankbait, or a little spinner or topwater.

*A strong walleye bite is going one, with smaller males providing the best action. Savvy anglers are either drifting or anchoring in 10 to 12 feet of water, using a slip bobber on the deeper side, and a jig on the shallower side. The walleye are scooting about right in and around weeds and are rock related. Best bait is a large or extra large fathead, with some anglers getting action on leeches.

*Northern are northern. Figuratively "throw an old sock" at them and you'll get action. Fish the weed edges or the tops of weeds in 4 to even 12 feet of watter. Best success coming on spinners or buzz baits.

*The crappie are in 5 feet of water or less and are providing a great bite. Use a small minnow, or a tube jig. Perch are being caught in the weeds in 6 to 8 feet of water, right off the bottom. Use a chunk of crawler or leaf worm.

The weather has been cooperating nicely, with rain here and there. Summer is coming up quickly!

Music Hybrids (Part 2)

And now we continue our look at the Musical Hybrid Acts I'd most like to see. Yesterday was 20-11, today it's the Top Ten, Baby

#10 Black Eyed Crows - Hey Baby, let me light your candles so they will turn into lumps of wax. My lovely Waxy Lumps.

#9 Motorloaf - I have no idea what they would sing, but I bet that bat gets outta Hell quick with a V-8 engine.

#8 Bobby Darin Duran - We're hungry like a wolf, but luckily Mac the Knife is nearby.

#7 Barry Whitesnake - Ain't gonna be nooo pussy left for the roadies, I tells ya.

#6 Backstreet Boyz II Men - I've heard one of these groups can actually sing, but I can't remember which.

#5 New Kids on the Block Sabbath - The only trouble brewing I can see is that it's 3 to 1 that Ozzy bites Joey's head off before the tour ends, but how can this be anything but a good thing?

#4 Jay-Z/DC - We're on the highway to Hell (so put yo' damn hands up)

#3 R Kelly Clarkson [Note: we regret to inform you that the joke Hyperion originally wrote has been removed because it was so filthy Redd Foxx came back to life just to have a heart-attack. Sorry for the inconvenience.]

#2 Hilary Duff Leppard - We've heard Duff's music described as sugary, but the spotted boys seem to like it that way. (Let's just hope she makes it through tour without too many Love Bites.)

and the number one music hybrid I'd like to see is....

#1 Celine Deyonce - Oh, you'd fuck her, but one of the two of you would have to die right after to avoid pillow talk. (And on that note, let's everybody sing a rousing chorus of "My Booty Will Go On!")

Music Hybrids

Years ago I predicted "fusion" or "hybrid" music as the next big thing. Of course (as usual), I was correct, as the music genres blended toward each other, with the biggest unifying sector being Hip-Hop (again, just as I predicted). Some even had the idea to do mash-ups, which I didn't actually think of but goes right along with my theories.

Anyway, the other day I got to thinking that it would be cool if we could literally mash musical groups together and see what kind of songs they'd come up with. For years I've longed for a Mariah Carey/Metallica World Tour, and I've have given a pretty penny to hear Frank Sinatra or Dean Martin sing Head Like a Hole.

But me being me, I had to get all clever, so instead of Mariah Carey and Metallica, I'd have something like Mariah Carey + Carrie Underwood = Mariah Carey Underwood. Lame, I know, but I bet you dollars to donuts you crack up at least four times.

Before we get to the Top 20 List, here are a few HMs:

    HONORABLE MENTION
    Desiree Charles
    Tori Amos Def
    Widespread Panic at the Disco
    Alexisonearthwindandfire
    Mamas and Papa Roach
    Grand Master Flash Railroad
    Mariah Carey Underwood
    The WHOdini
    Garth Brooks and Dunn
    Sinead B.T.O. Connor

Hopefully you've caught on how this works by now, but if not, ask a "cooler" co-worker to explain it to you. (You see, If Tori Amos and Mos Def merged into one, they'd be Tori Amos Def.)

    Anyway, here are the

Top 20 Musical Hybrids I'd like to See

#20 Three Snoop Dogg Night - Snoop looks like he'd fit right in, don't he?

#19 Blue Oyster Cult Jam (featuring Full Force) - I think I would be scared to go to this column, but I find "Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam (Featuring Full Force)" to be one of the funniest groups to even say, so how could I not pair them up?

#18 Spin Doctor Dre - When you mix the epitome of Cool with its complete antithesis, what do you get? (All I know is Little Miss better not be wrong, or she'll find a cap in her ass.)

#17 Patti Aerosmith - What can I say? Sometimes Love in an Elevator just ain't enough....

#16 RUN DMCCR - If only for the afterparty.....

#15 Alice Cooper in Chains - I been caught being hot for the Teacher once (when I was five).

#14 Two Live Motley Crew - One and One, we're havin' some fun (in the Makeup Room all day, and all of the night).

#12 Rolling Stone Temple Pilots - If you're half the man you used to be...(no wonder you can't get no satisfaction).

#11 Elton John Bon Jovi - "On a Rhinestone-studded steel horse I ride...."

    Up Next: the Top Ten

[Special thanks to both my sisters for ideas]

Fishing Season!

Fishing season has begun, and here are some fishing reports from the area...

-Anglers are having good success with both walleyes and crappie on the opening weekend of the fishing season.

-Best bite for walleyes is coming in low light hours, either early morning or early evening. Fish 4 to 6 feet off of weed edges, such as cabbage or milfoil, or off bends or flats where there's some current. During the day anglers can fish 18 to 22 feet, but the bite will not be as strong. Use a quarter-ounce or sixteenth-ounce jig tipped with a fathead. Some nice walleyes are being caught.

-Crappies are hitting shallow, in depths from 2 to 6 feet. The crappies have begun their spawn in the smaller, warmer lakes. Use a crappie minnow, or tube jig. Some anglers have said that waxies are also working.

Enjoy the beginning of fishing season!

Weather Update

Today is the opening day of fishing here in Wisconsin. It was nice to see boats on the lake once again because that means Summer is drawing near! The temps are cooler today and we had some rain this morning, which is much needed. This weekend the highs are in the mid 60s and rain is expected throughout today and possibly again on Monday.

Happy May!

The weather of May is upon us as we rejoice in the warmer temperatures. Fishing opener is just a few days away, starting this weekend. A few thunderstorms are expected next week, but that does not dampen our spirits as we are getting things underway for this summer! Piers are in the water, and our maintenance department is getting our grounds ready for the incoming families. Looks like it's going to be a great summer!
