Rhymes with Urkey

A few days ago I got an error message that read "UR-Key." I still don't know what that means, but it got me to thinking about words that rhyme with Urkey. I even made a Top Ten list about it.

One note: as you can imagine, there aren't that many words that rhyme with Urkey, so I had to fudge a bit. Some of the words were more "urk" words with an added "y." For example, if you saw this picture:

    The answer would be "Burke-y."

THE TOP TEN WORDS THAT RHYME WITH "URKEY"

    #10 - Murky

    #9 - Douglas Sirk-y

    #8 - Quirky

    #7 - Bulwark-y

    #6 - Cirque-y

    #5 - Captain Kirk-y

    #4 - Lurk-y

    #3 - Turkey

    #2 - Perky

And the #1 word that rhymes with "Urkey" is.....

    #1 - Jerky

Weekly Fishing Report

***Eagle River, Wis. (VILAS COUNTY) -- as of June 24, 2007:
(Head): Northern, smallies and bluegills providing best action, with walleye slow, and musky coming back after unstable weather, in the Eagle River, Wisconsin area.

Ups-and-downs in the weather caused the musky bite to slow in the Eagle River area, but with stable conditions returning the musky bite is starting to pick back up. Fish deep weeds, with depths ranging from 6 to 18 feet, depending on the lake. Inline spinners and bucktails are providing the most success.

Smallies are putting on a strong bite as they migrate to their summer haunts. Fish sand, gravel, rock and rubble areas in 10 to 15 feet of water.

Use a tube jig, or a wacky rigged Senko type worm. Some action coming on smaller crankbaits, but it is very area specific, and will not produce in all sectors. Worth a try, however.

Northern are real good. Fish the weed edges and weed flats, in 4 to 12 feet of water. Spinners, small Rapalas in minnow patterns, Husky Jerks in minnow or walleye patterns, and larger northern chubs are all working. The only problem using live bait right now is keeping it alive. The water temps are warm.

Walleye are just plain slow right now. Fish mid lake humps, reefs, and drop offs in depths ranging from 8 to 30 feet. Start deep, and as late afternoon approaches move shallower, ending up at first breaks or weed edges in about 12 feet of water. Use a jig tipped with a leech or half of a crawler.

There's a very good bluegill bite in and around weeds in 12 feet of water or less. A leaf worm, chunk of crawler or waxie under a slip bobber is working.

Crappie action is OK, but nothing special. Crappie are being caught in two different areas. Crappie are suspending at varying depths in 25 feet of water over mid-lake structure like brush piles or rock piles, and there is a weed related bite in 16 feet of water or less. Minnows, under a slip bobber or cubby jigs will offer the best chances for success.

Summer Has Begun

    Greetings from the Northwoods!

Our summer season has officially begun this weekend, and we are excited to welcome familiar faces back to St. Germain. We have also welcomed back some summer staff from Poland, and some new employees as well.

This evening, our summer children's program kicks off with a campfire and s'mores at our south point campfire pit. Hopefully the rain will hold off until after it gets done!

All of our boats have been in the water for some time, and the weather has been cooperative, but warm, for June. We are looking forward to seeing our return guests this summer, and seeing the new faces as well.

    See you up here!
    Bess

Weekly Fishing Report

Fishing Report -- as of June 17, 2007:

Outstanding bass and northern bite, with musky and crappie good, and the mayfly hatch slowing down walleye in the Eagle River, Wisconsin area.

Bass action is outstanding in the Eagle River area. Bedding fish will be there for a few days, otherwise it's "playtime." Tubes, wacky-rigged plastics with no weights, Fat Raps or smaller Husky Jerks, spinner baits, frog pattern topwaters are prime for both large and smallmouths. Begin in 5 to 8 feet of water, and work any kind of structure. Mostly largemouth will be lurking in the shadows. Find the hard bottoms and transition zones from rock to sand, drop a crawler or medium to large leech. Average size is 18 inches with a lot showing up over 20.
Northern are everywhere in the Eagle River area, and mid-sized chubs, spinnerbaits, and small topwaters are finding them. Start in the weeds around 6 feet and work your way out. Nice catches coming in daily.

Musky action is pretty good in the Eagle River area, with good numbers of 40-plus inch fish from the Eagle River Chain of 28 lakes (the largest freshwater chain of lakes in the world), hitting for the most part on smaller lures. The trusted Mepps spinners in contrasting colors continue to pull in fish. The Eagle River Wiz has been providing action in flame/black and orange/black. Pull out jerk- and twitch-baits now, too. Work these in and around weeds in water down to around 10 feet. When there's wind, fish around inside turns and points in water to 18 feet, dropping Fuzzy Duzzits or Depthraiders.

A lot of smaller walleye are being reported for those who continue to fish them in and around Eagle River. The problem right now is the mayfly hatch which is in full swing. The walleye are stuffing themselves right now and this annual ritual will slow down the bite all week. Indeed, any walleye being caught usually have their mouths chock full of mayflies. Savvy anglers are fishing deeper rocks or wood, even weeds, using one of those new Rapala Minnow Raps. These babies get down there and have been a solid producer.

Slipbobbers with a leech or crawler will be worth it in these areas, especially on the larger Eagle River area lakes.

Crappie are moving back out, but start near deadfall trees, stumps or brushpiles you find in 6 to 8 feet of water. Crappie minnows and tube jigs have been the ticket. Action is good, if not spectacular. Perch and bluegill are somewhat tough, but shoreline weeds or weedy mid-lake humps have been producing with crawlers, leafworms, and chunks of Berkley Gulp.

Fishing Report

Here is this week's fishing report:

Great smallie action, with night bite for walleye picking up, as some windy conditions slow down musky in the Eagle River, Wisconsin area.

While the fishing action in the Eagle River area still remains good across the board, with some species terrific, when there's wind, patterns and the bite can change.

The smallie bite in the Eagle River area (catch and release until the opener on June 16) remains phenomenal. The smallies are starting to bed, with water temps in the 63 to 67 degree range. Target shallower bedding areas, around cover. Use baits like a Rapala and plastics. The largemouth are also hitting in the same general type of areas as the smallies, but the bite is not quite as fierce.

Walleye action in the Eagle River area is steady if not spectacular, with the night bite starting to pick up. The walleye are weed related. Use a redtail chub, or a leech in weeds, with the bigger walleye somewhat deeper.

One caveat: Anglers should recognize that with the spring mayfly hatch just beginning, there may be a slowdown in the walleye action for about a week, as the hatch becomes full-blown.

Musky action is up-and-down, with wind and fluctuating water temps necessitating some change in tactics. In windy conditions anglers should try two different areas. When there's wind pounding shorelines, musky will head in for bait fish to the shallow shoreline areas, where there's immediate access to deeper water. Musky are going after bass, crappie and bluegills in this skinny water. Work these areas inside and out with any variety of smaller baits. There are also fish being caught in deeper water off of mid-lake humps, with the musky suspending. Anglers are using baits like a 10 inch Jake, which is not a typical spring pattern. The bottom line for successful musky fishing right now is the ability to adapt to what Mother Nature throws at us. This season is a perfect example.

Lots of northern in the upper 20 inch range are being taken in and around weeds in depths up to 8 feet. Large chubs or spinner baits are working.
Crappies, a lot of them still full of eggs are providing action around broader leaf weeds in 5 to 7 feet of water. Crappie minnows or very small plastics are working.
The bluegill spawning ritual is starting. Fish shallow sandy areas around weeds and use a leaf worm.

Good numbers of perch are being caught near the bottom in weeds, locating in
5 to 10 feet of water. Crappie minnows or large fatheads are taking some good sized perch, but anglers will do a lot of sorting, as most of the perch are average or smaller.

Happy June!

Greetings! Today is the first day of June and summer is rolling in with blue skies and temperatures in the 80's. Just a quick note, the first fawn sighting of the year occurred just the other day. Diane spotted the young deer by Rustic Manor Motor Lodge, across highway 70. Woooo! For sure, June is here! Get outside!
