Dragon's Oscar Fashion Picks

I had a great time watching the Oscars last night. I wanted to to share with you my favourite dresses of the night. By the way, don't forget to check out Hyperion's Oscar run down. Pretty darn funny.

    10. Kate Winslet looked lovely in this pale green Valentino gown.

    9. Jessica Biel looked a little 'chilly' in this raspberry Oscar de la Renta dress.

    8. Rachel Weisz went "old Hollywood" in this platinum Vera Wang gown.

    7. Will Smith got to take home a golden statue after all. Jada Pinkett Smith glowed in this gold Carolina Herrera gown.

    6. Helen Mirren was Hollywood royalty in the Christian Lacroix gown.

#5. Jennifer Lopez never disappointment me. She was simply stunning in this crystal-encrusted lilac Marchesa gown.

#4. Gwyneth Paltrow looked very sexy in her salmon coloured Zac Posen gown.

#3. Cate Blanchett was shimmering in this silver mesh Armani gown.

#2. Wow! Being single seems to agree with Reese Witherspoon. I loved this layered deep purple Nina Ricci gown.

#1. This was the first gown I saw last night and what can I say, I fell in love. It was couture at its most glamorous best. Penelope Cruz was a romantic vision in this blush coloured Versace gown.

    Agree? Disagree? Let me know.
    xo,

Vintage Snowmobile Racing

Here it is... a glimpse at the vintage racing yesterday in St. Germain! Amateur video, but it's not too long.

By the way -- we received snow overnight :) It's windy and drifting so hard to measure (because depth is inconsistent) but our best guess at this point is 4-6 inches on the ground so far. Storm warning is still in effect until tonight.

After the vintage racing yesterday John and I took our boys out to hide two geocaches. The Great Northwoods Treasure Hunt begins March 1. We have GPS Kits at the Black Bear office so novices (like ourselves) can participate in this treasure hunt. I was surprised to find how easy it was to get the GPS working and how accurate it was once we plotted our cache then came home to see on a google map where our coordinates had identified it. I suppose the snow overnight will make finding our stashes much more difficult! --Diane Misina

Weekend Snowmobile Races

Although we are lacking in snow, the snowmobile races this weekend have not been stopped! We have our own Vintage Snowmobile Races here in St. Germain tomorrow, starting at 10am. They have been preparing the track for two months...nothing is stopping them now! Check it out!

The National Pro Sno-Cross Weekend kicked off today at the Eagle River Derby Track. Sponsored by Amsoil, these races feature the best of the best, and will be a weekend running on adrenaline. The sno-cross track is in good shape as they have been making snow.

This weekend we are expecting our biggest snowstorm all winter, so stay tuned! With some luck, the snow will restore the poor snowmobile trails. Snow will start light tonight, start falling stronger Saturday, and should continue through Tuesday. High temperatures should be hovering around the mid to high twentys. Stay tuned!

Weather Update

Warm temperatures and sunshine spoiled us today! Temps were in the upper 40s in the area which caused much of our snow to melt. As I am typing this, it is raining.....
Our most updated forecast shows temperatures in the mid to high 20s from tonight through this weekend with a 30% chance of snow Thursday & Friday. We are expecting a 60% chance of snow on Saturday and Sunday with accumulations possible.
Even though our Snowmobile trails are suffering, the Derby Track in Eagle River is in great shape for this weekend's National Pro Snowcross Weekend! They have been making snow and preparing the track for this exciting event!
We will be sure to keep you posted on the conditions over weekend!

Potato Chips

For the longest time potato chip flavors were pretty much limited to the big three: Cheddar Cheese (which really wasn't all that cheesy); Barbecue (which really wasn't all tha barbecuey); and Sour Cream and Onion (which was quite a feat in itself, seing as how Hyperion liked the chips, while simultaneously disliking both sour cream and and onions).

I don't know if it was lack of imagination or just the difficulty in getting a real world flavor to translate as a dried spice on the chip. In recent years several other flavors have been added, some with more sucess than others. Salt and Pepper and Vinegar don't do much for me, and the Ketchup flavored one is only so so. Kettle Chips have made some headway, but those chips are so good anything they do is usually awesome.

The potato is such a versatile food, people should be making all sorts of flavors. I have taken it upon myself to come up with a few. Those of you who are in Contact with Big Potato: get these ideas to them, and make sure my royalties are covered:

THE TOP SIX POTATO CHIP FLAVORS I WANT TO SEE

#6 Pina Colada - My mom actually suggested this, but it's a good idea. Coconut, pineapple and a dried rum liquer flavoring would make a pretty great chip!

#5 Coca Cola - This is a natural fit. I think that signature fizzy taste on your tongue would go great on a potato chip, and this might lead to a whole new round of polar bear commercials!

#4 Honey - This sweet and salty combo would be out of this world good. BONUS: Honey Garlic is a totally kickass wing flavor: chips would be good here too.

#3 Chili - I know that some chips have recently added Chili as a flavor, but I mean to coat the entire chip in Chili Powder. When I make my award-winning oven fries Chili Powder is my go to spice, with many a secuded comely lass to tell me it works! Bring on the heat!

#2 Mango - It seems to me that Citrus would dry better (and therefore translate to chips) better than other fruits. my mom wanted Watermelon Kiwi, but they are two waterbased. A ripe mango taste would be perfect here. Mangos are sweet but not overpowering, and the added tang would be heavenly alongside the salt of the chip.

and the number one flavor I'd like to see on Potato Chips.....

#1 Chocolate - Frankly I cannot believe this hasn't happened yet. A thin dried potato chip is the perfect medium for chocolate. You could just add cocoa powder for a dark choloate delight, or any amount of sugar and milk cholate solids to make a truly sinful treat. Are you telling me that women wouldn't eat these by the truckload? Even the name is kismet: chocolate chips! I think I should get some congratulatory BJs just for thinking this up!

Geocaching FAQ's

    What is Geocaching?
Geocaching is an entertaining adventure game for gps users. The basic idea is to have individuals and organizations set up caches all over the world and share the locations of these caches on the Internet. GPS users can then use the location coordinates to find the caches. Once found, a cache may provide the visitor with a wide variety of rewards. All the visitor is asked to do is if they get something they should try to leave something for the cache.

    How do you pronounce Geocaching?
You pronounce it Geo-cashing, like cashing a check.

So what's the big deal? You gave me the coordinates so I know where it is. Seems pretty easy.
It is deceptively easy. It's one thing to see where an item is, it's a totally different story to actually get there.

    What is a GPS device?
A GPS unit is a electronic device that can determine your approximate location (within around 6-20 feet) on the planet. Coordinates are normally given in Longitude and Latitude. You can use the unit to navigate from your current location to another location. Some units have their own maps, built-in electronic compasses, voice navigation, depending on the complexity of the device.
You don't need to know all the technical mumbo jumbo about GPS units to play Geocaching. All you need to do is be able to enter what is called a "waypoint" where the geocache is hidden. This is simply entering in the coordinates of the cache you are trying to find.

What are the rules in Geocaching?
Geocaching is a relatively new phenomenon. Therefore, the rules are very simple:
    1. Take something from the cache
    2. Leave something in the cache
    3. Write about it in the logbook

What is usually in a cache?
A cache can come in many forms but the first item should always be the logbook. In its simplest form a cache can be just a logbook and nothing else. The logbook contains information from the founder of the cache and notes from the cache's visitors. The logbook can contain much valuable, rewarding, and entertaining information. A logbook might contain information about nearby attractions, coordinates to other unpublished caches, and even jokes written by visitors. If you get some information from a logbook you should give some back.
Larger caches may consist of a waterproof plastic bucket placed tastefully within the local terrain. The bucket will contain the logbook and any number of more or less valuable items. These items turn the cache into a true treasure hunt. You never know what the founder or other visitors of the cache may have left there for you to enjoy. Remember, if you take something, its only fair for you to leave something in return. Items in a bucket cache could be: Maps, books, software, hardware, CD's, videos, pictures, money, jewelry, tickets, antiques, tools, games, etc. It is recommended that items in a bucket cache be individually packaged in a clear zipped plastic bag to protect them.

    Where are caches found?
The location of a cache can be very entertaining indeed. As many say, location, location, location! The location of a cache demonstrates the founder's skill and possibly even daring. A cache located on the side of a rocky cliff accessible only by rock climbing equipment may be hard to find. An underwater cache may only be accessed by scuba. Other caches may require long difficult hiking, orienteering, and special equipment to get to. Caches may be located in cities both above and below ground, inside and outside buildings. The skillful placement of a small logbook in an urban environment may be quite challenging to find even with the accuracy of a gps. That little logbook may have a hundred dollar bill in it or a map to greater treasure. It could even contain clues or riddles to solve that may lead to other caches.

    Give it a try!

Snow!

We received about a half an inch of light, fluffy snow last night! Although it wasn't much, it did help out the snowmobile trails. Temperatures are supposed to stay in the teens for the rest of the weekend. Flurries will continue into tonight. Think snow!

Weather Update

Well, we still have not received any recent accumulation of snow, but we are not giving up hope! We are supposed to receive flurries and some snow showers throughout the weekend, but accumulation, if any, will be very little.

Snowmobile trails are fair to good condition. We do have little snow on the trails, and some of the corners are icy. However, the Bo-Boen Snowmobile Club continues to groom the trails every night, and they do a great job! Snowmobilers are taking advantage of the snow, and still going out, especially onto the lakes.

Cross country skiing conditions are in good to excellent condition, and with the temperatures rising above 0 degrees, more enthusiasts are getting out there! The wind is a bit cold, so dress appropriately. For your feet while cross country skiing, invest in some SmartWool socks. These socks are excellent for any temperature, have good wicking ability, and are incredibly soft and comfortable!

Snowshoeing conditions are fair to poor in the woods. They are not bad in open fields or spaces. We simply need a big snowstorm! If you are an avid snowshoer, take a look into the Snowshoe Blaze, coming up on March 3 here in St. Germain. It includes demonstrations, and a moonlight snowshoe trek to top it off!

    Think snow!

Klondike Days!

Tomorrow, the 17th annual Klondike Days will kick off in Eagle River. This weekend long festival was started back in the late 1980's. Klondike Days reflects the history and pioneering spirit of Eagle River's original settlers and Native American culture.

Check out this family-oriented gala event and experience turn-of-the-century activities! Highlights of the weekend will be a Living History Museum, a dog-weight pull, lumberjack competition, chainsaw carving competition, the Native American cultural exposition, and a huge winter craft show.

Take some time and dig into the root of the Northwoods!

Snow...or lack of...

Well, we have not received any recent snowfall, but the snowmobilers are still out there and taking advantage of what we do have! Trails are rideable and in good to fair condition. With the colder temperatures, the snow that we do have is sticking with us! Grooming of the trails continues every night.

Cross country ski trails are in good to excellent conditions. Once again, the colder temperatures did wonders for the trails, and it is prime conditions for skating and classic techniques!

Snowshoeing conditions are fair. There is not a lot of powder or fresh snow, so conditions are not so prime for a trek in the woods! We need more snow!

Ice skating conditions are great, all you have to do is dress warmly and have fun!

Superbowl Day!

We awoke to temperatures at -20! We have a wind chill advisory/warning for the remainder of the weekend into Monday. Talk about cold! Here are some extreme cold temperatures statistics for you to mull over as you go throughout the day...

*The coldest temperature ever recorded in the US was, of course, in Alaska. The record low of -79.8 degrees was recorded on January 23, 1971, at Prospect Creek Camp, along the Alaskan pipeline, about 20 miles north of the Arctic Circle. Wow!

*The coldest temperature recorded in Wisconsin was -55 degrees on February 6, 1996 in the town of Couderay! It is the coldest temperature recorded east of the Mississippi. Not as cold as Alaska, but it is still down there!

*Hawaii is the only state in the US never to record a below-zero temperature, setting it's lowest temperature at 12 degrees above zero.

Make some hot cocoa and enjoy Superbowl XLI!
